Painting Tom Thomson: A Colourist’s Legacy

We love Tom Thomson's work for its colour, its energy, the textured brushwork and rich application of paint, for the movement expressed through the spontaneity and rapidity of execution and for the response of his soul to place.

Thomson works with the simplest arrangement of beautifully designed shapes, condensing and distilling the experience into energetic colour shots.  Van Gogh declared that the next great artist would be a great colourist; certainly, Tom Thomson is the inheritor of that mantle.

Learn much about the application of twentieth-century colour theory through a Canadian passionate about painting. Thomson’s approach to painting and to colour harmonies can be used for realistic subject matter, and equally as a method for abstraction of the image or pure abstraction.

On the day of the workshop online, in class, you will paint three small 'field studies' and begin a larger canvas informed by the vibrancy of Thomson's colours, toned grounds, simplified shapes, and textured brushwork.  Oil or acrylic.  All levels of experience.

The main components of this workshop are:

1) a period of directed self-study, preparation of surfaces and image choice prior to the day online.  On February 14th, Andrea will forward hand-outs, links to videos and other reference material.

2) a day-long painting session with Andrea, over Zoom, on Wednesday, February 24th.  Andrea will discuss Thomson's approach in a slide show, and demonstrate his techniques. In the morning, you will paint three small field sketches.  In the afternoon, Andrea will show and discuss more Thomson paintings.  You will begin to scale up a large painting.

3) feedback and critique of your work via e-mail, February 25th to March 6th.  It is anticipated that you will finish the larger painting after the workshop and send an image in for review.  Andrea is looking forward to working with you.
